LIZ - Hey neighbors, my name is Liz …
PETER – And my name is Peter, Welcome to episode 1 of the Real Community show...
LIZ – We’re your local realtors and community enthusiasts … here to showcase the areas that we love, and call home.
PETER - That’s right, we want to be your guide to real community, and it starts right here with the city of Berkley!
LIZ - Following a conversion from forest to farmland, Berkley was recognized as a village in 1923. Freshly established, the community enjoyed consistent growth until the nation was rocked by the Wall Street crash. Roughly 90% of Berkley’s five-and-a-half-thousand residents lost their jobs and population started to decline.. but voters took action. In 1932 Berkley was incorporated into a city to gain more oversight over taxes and community issues. The post-war economic boom of the 1940’s powered significant city development and paved the way for construction of Berkley High School in 1949.
PETER - Today, Berkley is home to about fifteen-thousand people! Located in southeastern Oakland County, it lies between Woodward and Greenfield… south of Webster and north of 11 mile.
Berkley’s award winning school district is recognized for its high standard of education and commitment to the arts. It includes four elementary schools … the Norup International Academy, Anderson Middle School, and Berkley High School… which made Newsweek’s list of “1,000 Best High Schools in the nation.”
The city is also supported by its municipal offices, public library and public safety office... which is actively engaged in maintaining Berkley's status as one of the best and safest cities in Michigan!
LIZ - As you walk down the street, there’s a definite family-friendly atmosphere fostered through tight-knit neighborhoods and a walkable downtown. The two main streets, 12 Mile and Coolidge, have everything you need – retail, art, beauty, health and fitness – and of course … delicious restaurants. One of our favorites is Berkley Common. This vibrant spot is relatively new in town, but they’re all about community. They use fresh, local ingredients whenever possible to create unique small plates that go perfectly with a craft beer or refreshing cocktail… keep watching this year as we release episodes that feature the Berkley Common and other great small businesses in our community.
Speaking of which … let’s talk about summer life in Berkley! It’s filled with festivals and events – from the annual Art Bash to Cruisefest to Irish Fest you’ll never run out of family fun in this vibrant downtown.
PETER – No matter what style of home you’re looking for … Bungalow, Craftsman or Colonial ... chances are Berkley has you covered. It’s easy to see why this city with small-town charm is such a desirable place to live and invest.
